Hardware Description


This section covers the hardware set for our use in this project:

All xbox consoles have these hardwares:

- Pentiun III, 733MHz main processor (Celeron class)

- A dedicated 200Mhz graphic processor by Nvidia.

- 4 input jacks that follow the USB standard, but have a different wire setting.

- 64 MB RAM.

- 8 or 10 GB IDE HDD. With the lock feature activated (a 32KB password accessed through IDE).

- A DVD drive.

 

For our project we'll use one of the Xbox provided by LISHA (Software Hardware Integration Laboratory, in Portuguese), this is its settings:

- XBox version: v1.1

- Pentiu m III, 733MHz main processor (Celeron class)

- A dedicated 200Mhz graphic processor by Nvidia.

- 4 input jacks that follow the USB standard, but have a different wire setting.

  - Port 1 has been modified to be a standard female USB port.

- 64 MB RAM

- 8GB IDE HDD. With the lock feature activated (a 32KB password accessed through IDE).

- A Thompson DVD drive.

So basically its 99.9% a common computer. The only difference lies on the way the hardware interacts with the software, since the BIOS have security functions that test if a program have or have not permission to access any device. All code have to be digitally signed with 2048 bit RSA encryption. This is a very strong encryption, since common bank transactions use a standard 1024 bit RSA encryption.

The xbox also use a specific partition system, the FATX.

 

[Notebook]

Other: Xircom Ethernet/Modem, WaveLAN, 8GB IDE.

 

Note: We saw that the notebook didn't have an USB port when we first had a chance to see it. So it will not be used in the project. Instead we will connect to Professor Guto's Notebook (a.k.a. Killer Robot's Notebook).
